Martin E. Marty is one of the foremost authorities on religion and society. He is the
Fairfax M. Cone Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus at the
University of Chicago, where he taught for over 35 years. He received a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1956, served as a Lutheran pastor from 1952 to 1962 in the suburbs of Chicago, and is the former President of the
American Catholic Historical Association. Upon Professor Marty's retirement in 1998, the
Divinity School at the University of Chicago renamed its Institute for the Advanced Study of Religion, which Marty founded back in 1979,
The Martin Marty Center. Marty is the author of over fifty books, including
Righteous Empire
, winner of the
National Book Award, the three volume,
Modern American Religion, and
The One and the Many: America's Search for the Common Good.
